QUILT AS YOU GO

this is how the row will look or similar when you construct your own.each row when finished is added to the one before it and the top seam is covered the same way as the smaller between square seams are covered. Once you have it the size you want it to be you can add the sashing around the edges the same way you did the individual squares with sandwiching the backing, batting and the top together, pre-quilting it before you attach it the same way then putting your edging on it the old fashioned way. This one was done the opposite way with the seams covered on the back instead of the front.

There is more then one way to do quilt as you go. I will attempt to show you at least two of the ones I have used. This first one I did 1 full sized and two crib sized quilts,

Method #1

cut all the backing and batting and top squares at the same time allowing for a 1/4 inch seam on all sides. If you are doing embroidered blocks then do them before you cut the square to the final size.

each square is made into a sandwich of backing batting and top square. The right sides of the backing and the top are right side OUT. I did a simple quilt outline on each square to hold them together. I again measured the final size of the square and trimmed off what was excess.

each square was then sewn together by placing two squares with sides matching and back sides together leaving a seam on the TOP of the quilt. This was then covered with a piece of matching or contrasting bias tape or a piece I cut that was 2 inches wide then pressing both sides in to meet.  You need wide flat fold bias for this... the seams may be too thick so trim as close as you dare without cutting into the seam line. Press flat before applying the tape or fabric strip over this.

(The Second Method   This one is a work in progress as it is the one I am working on now for my yahoo group project. The first row only is completely done. THEN cut the backing and batting to fit this row and quilt them. I used in the ditch method.  The second row you only complete the top as far the sides and bottom of the squares for me that is. As the top row has the bottom row on it and that IS the top of the next row.Next you sandwich the first row bottom with the the second row top , batting and batting. On this quilt I allowed a half inch for my seam then trimmed it back to 1/4 inch. Fold the top piece, backing and batting down and press them, then stitch in the ditch or quilt this new row.
